NBEMS Launches Program to Check Infant and Child Car Seats

For Immediate Release:
October 16, 2006
NBEMS Contact:
Assistant Chief Jan Carbonneau
(860) 225 -8787 ext. 12

New Britain Emergency Medical Services has recently trained Certified Car Safety Seat Inspectors who offer free car seat checks on Mondays at the NBEMS Headquarters, 225 Arch Street, New Britain.

“NBEMS paramedics and EMTs often see the results of improperly installed car seats while responding to accidents”, said NBEMS Chief Bruce Baxter. “We decided it was in the best interests of the children in New Britain to train our personnel to inspect child safety restraints.”

National statistics indicate that 70% of infant and child car seats are not properly used or installed. That is an appalling statistic! Furthermore, many parents are not aware of new laws in Connecticut that require booster seats for all children less than 60 pounds.

Parents who want to learn how to safely transport their children can drive to NBEMS any Monday (except holidays), turn in to the parking lot and pull up to the Child Safety Inspection Center. NBEMS certified inspectors will explain how your restraint system works and check to see that your child seat is properly installed. There is no charge for this inspection.

A recent television story highlighted the fact that there is a shortage of people certified to inspect theses car seats. We are fortunate in New Britain to have NBEMS trained inspectors ready to check infant and child car safety seats.
