MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF Dear Community Members, Welcome to the New Britain EMS Web Site! We are located in a modern up to date facility that will support the projected growth in demand for clinical and educational services well into the future. Our fleet of late model response vehicles are well equipped to manage a wide array of medical, traumatic and disaster contingencies. Our staff is well trained and operates under the medical direction authority of the New Britain General Hospital Department of Emergency Medicine’s Medical Director. Our partnership with the City of New Britain, New Britain Public Safety Telecommunications Center and New Britain Fire Department assures the most critical patients receive the timeliest care. Patients suffering a life threatening medical emergency receive immediate assistance through 9-1-1 operator coached first aid instructions. Pre-arrival instructions, the rapid response of first responder trained fire companies coupled with the prompt arrival of a New Britain EMS paramedic ambulance, creates a chain of survival that allows us to save additional lives. Unlike other communities in the State, New Britain EMS is not a Department of the City. We do not receive a tax based subsidy from the City to fund our operations. Revenues received from (patients’) health insurance plans fund day to day operations. Community philanthropy sustains mission essential services without sacrificing our continuing efforts to expand upon the margins of excellence as 9-1-1 emergency medical care provider. Individual and corporate donations, as well as grants have provided capital for emerging clinical technologies, disaster preparedness and training. This commitment is integral to providing our patients with the best possible opportunity for a positive outcome when stricken with a life threatening emergency. As an example, New Britain EMS was the first service to equip all of its ambulances with the AutoPulse, a life saving cardiac care device, automatic ventilators, CPAP technology to treat patients with difficulty breathing without having to place them on a ventilator. Our Training Division, a designated American Heart Association Community Training Center, provides a menu of health and safety courses for the lay public, business and industry as well as initial certification classes for those interested in pursuing a career in EMS. They manage the continuing education and certification requirements for our staff as well as the New Britain Fire Department. They coordinate other outreach initiatives including community health and safety lectures, the New Britain High School EMS Career’s Education Program and our child car seat safety initiative as New Britain EMS is the only registered Child Car Seat Safety Inspection facility in the City. Our Special Operations Division coordinates the planning and deployment of medical personnel at a number of community events in addition to planning and managing the EMS operational components of major incident disaster response. Developments in information technology have allowed New Britain EMS to implement electronic clinical documentation recording systems to streamline patient care delivery while ensuring patient privacy; and distributive learning and quality management systems to enhance our organization’s ability to better care for the community. As New Britain EMS responds to the demands of the present and needs of the future, we remain committed to serving our mission of improving the health of the community through the provision of superior pre-hospital emergency medical services. To your continued health and safety, Bruce B. Baxter, EMT-P
