CLINICAL SERVICES DIVISION The Clinical Services Division of New Britain EMS oversees the emergency response operations of the organization. New Britain EMS maintains a reputation as one of the premier EMS agencies in New England. Our dedicated team of 53 clinical employees serves the City of New Britain, including its 71,524 residents, the 12,731 students and employees of Central Connecticut State University, as well as New Britain Stadium, home of the minor league Rockcats Baseball Team. In 2006 our staff responded to over 10,000 requests for assistance, treating almost 12,000 patients. Part of what makes New Britain EMS unique is our dedication to quality prehospital care. All of our employees undergo a rigorous screening process before being accepted into our orientation program. During their orientation, new employees undergo training in all aspects of prehospital response including the incident management system, interagency cooperation, emergency vehicle operations, and hazardous materials awareness. During their precepting phase of orientation, new employees and students are mentored by one of our Field Training Officers who have over twenty five years of combined prehospital care experience. Once the orientation process is completed, our employees maintain their skills both clinically and through continuous training and quality improvement. Our system treats an average of 4,150 patients per unit, making it the busiest in the region, and giving our staff ample opportunity to maintain their skills. In addition to their average 900 annual patient contacts, all of our full-time advanced life support providers a required to perform annual skills training, including time with the staff of the operating room at The Hospital of Central Connecticut. Since its inception, New Britain EMS has remained on the cutting edge of EMS research and technology. Our service was the first in Connecticut to utilize the AutoPulse cardiac arrest resuscitation device. We were also the first to utilize adult intraosseous (Bone Marrow) medication administration utilizing the state of the art EZ-IO system. EMS research has also been a top priority at New Britain EMS. Over the years, clinical trials at the agency have resulted in adoption of life-saving technology still unavailable in some areas, including Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) Ventilation for patients in Pulmonary Edema, as well as Medication Assisted Intubation for patients in respiratory failure. New Britain EMS continues to strive to be one of the premier EMS services in New England. Our close relationship with the Hospital of Central Connecticut, the City of New Britain, and the New Britain Fire and Police Departments provide us with the opportunity to continue to grow and expand our abilities to provide emergency care to our citizens through state of the art technology, experienced providers and progressive prehospital care.
