New Britain Emergency Medical Services

Celebrating 50 Years of Service

In 1977 Dr. Martin Dinep and Dr. Richard Judd envisioned something New Britain had never had before: a dedicated, professional emergency medical service built specifically for this city and its people. The New Britain Common Council agreed, voted to bring that vision to life, and New Britain EMS was organized and incorporated as a non-profit agency under the Connecticut General Statutes — the first EMS system of its kind in Hartford County and the New England region become a nationally recognized model.

Five decades later, that founding vision is still showing up every single day. In 2025, we responded to 17,143 requests for medical assistance and treated over 17,000 patients — who join a growing list of nearly half a million patients treated since 1977. We are New Britain's designated 911 ambulance and paramedic service.

Investing in the Next 50 Years

For nearly 50 years, New Britain EMS has been there when our community needs us most. As we enter Fiscal Year 2027, we are launching a capital fundraising campaign to make sure our crews have the equipment, technology, and resources they need to continue providing exceptional emergency medical care.

At the center of this effort is our 50th Anniversary Gala in spring 2027 — a milestone celebration of our history and an investment in the future of emergency medical services in New Britain.

How is New Britain EMS funded?

New Britain EMS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. While we are not a city-managed or city-funded department, we maintain strong working relationships with the City of New Britain and its departments.
Our primary revenue comes from billing for emergency medical transport. When we respond to an emergency and transport a patient to the hospital, we bill their insurance.

The challenge is that a large portion of the patients we serve are covered by Medicare or Medicaid. These government programs reimburse ambulance services according to fixed fee schedules that can fall well below the actual cost of responding to an emergency.

That leaves a significant gap between the cost of providing care and the reimbursement we receive. Fundraising, community donations, and in-kind support from the City of New Britain help us bridge that gap and remain ready for the next call.

Modern emergency medicine requires significant investment. A single cardiac monitor can cost approximately $50,000. A powered stretcher can cost $35,000. Emergency ventilators and automated CPR devices can each cost approximately $16,000.

Our crews also rely on advanced airway equipment, 12-lead ECG technology, portable ultrasound, blood program equipment, medications, and other lifesaving tools that fee-for-service reimbursement alone does not fully cover.

New Britain EMS maintains seven response-ready ambulances, each equipped to deliver advanced emergency care when every second matters.Your support helps ensure those ambulances — and the people inside them — are ready to answer the call.
